Heartsease, or Johnny Jump Ups as they are commonly called, are part of the Viola family.  They are a very old European wildflower, even mentioned in Shakespeare’s writings.

I adore their perky little faces!

They are self seeding and should return every year, “jumping up” here and there in the garden.

For some reason mine never seem to return on their own!

Happily, every spring the nursuries are full of them.  As I certainly wouldn’t want to miss their cheerful presence in the garden!
